A Collaborative Effort for hope and healing

In a remarkable demonstration of collaboration and commitment, three organizations have joined forces with ALAM Suisse to create the Barbara Nassar Cancer Center for Supportive Care in Beirut, Lebanon: the Lebanese B2B opportunities and outsourcing platform OUTERPOND, the ALBA Faculty of Fine Arts and the Barbara Nassar Association. The Genesis of the Project

The Barbara Nassar Cancer Center for Supportive Care is more than just a building; it represents a beacon of hope and transformation for many individuals facing the arduous journey of cancer. This center is the result of a multi-stakeholder project created by OUTERPOND for ALAM Suisse, adding one more meaningful initiative in Lebanon to the arsenal of the Geneva-based association. Indeed, ALAM Suisse has been actively involved in various causes since 2020, focusing on health, education, humanitarian efforts, environmental sustainability, and sustainable development.

The Barbara Nassar Association was founded in memory of Barbara Nassar, a courageous woman who battled metastatic breast cancer with unwavering determination.

Diagnosed in 2009, Barbara faced numerous chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions. In 2011, she embarked on ‘The Lebanese Flag Trip’ with her family, traveling to over 1655 villages in Lebanon, collecting signatures on a large Lebanese flag for the President. Despite the spread of cancer to her brain in 2012, she continued to inspire and challenge her condition. In 2013, from Lebanon’s highest peak, she sent regards to her doctors. On February 4, 2014, bedridden, she saw the legal birth of her long-awaited NGO to support adult cancer patients. Barbara passed away on February 27, 2014, having ensured her mission would continue. Her legacy lives on through the Barbara Nassar Association, which provides comprehensive support to adult cancer patients in Lebanon, advocating for their needs and enhancing their quality of life.

An Inspiring Collaboration

For the Barbara Nassar Cancer Center to come to fruition, the association needed to renovate a 4-story building in Achrafieh. ALAM rose to the occasion and orchestrated a chain of action allowing the renovation to begin quickly, while giving the chance to Lebanese students to benefit from this rich experience.

Recognizing the unique potential of the ALBA Faculty of Fine Arts, ALAM Suisse initiated a competition inviting architecture and interior design students to contribute their creativity and vision to the Barbara Nassar Cancer Center project. This competition was not just an academic exercise but a call to action for young minds to engage in a project with profound social impact. Forty-eight talented students participated, showcasing exceptional enthusiasm and innovation. Their contributions have significantly enriched the initial study of the project, demonstrating the immense potential of Lebanon’s youth to drive positive change.

Gabriel Sawaya, representing ALAM Suisse, testified about this collaboration:

"Our collaboration with ALBA has been nothing short of inspiring."

A Vision Beyond Comprehensive Cancer Care

The Barbara Nassar Cancer Center for Supportive Care is designed to provide a holistic approach to cancer treatment and support.

From the moment of diagnosis, the center will offer free access to specialized clinics, a pharmacy, and various supportive care activities such as yoga, art therapy, music therapy, and Zumba. These activities aim to reduce stress and offer patients the opportunity to connect and share experiences under the guidance of medical professionals.

The Barbara Nassar Cancer Center will also feature house workshops for patients, providing them with opportunities to learn crafts and generate income, thus aiding in their rehabilitation and maintaining their productivity.

Hani Nassar, Founder and President of the Barbara Nassar Association, described a vision for the center that goes even beyond supportive and rehabilitative care. The center will also include a cancer museum and be home to an educational hub for school students, raising awareness about cancer risk factors, types, symptoms, and the influence of diet and the environment.

A Legacy of Compassion and Support

The Barbara Nassar Association, founded in memory of Barbara Nassar, a brave cancer patient who fought her battle with grace and determination, plays a crucial role in this project. The association is dedicated to supporting adult cancer patients across Lebanon, providing emotional, physical, and financial assistance. Their mission extends beyond medical treatment, focusing on enhancing the overall quality of life for patients through wellness programs, advocacy, and support networks.

Barbara Nassar’s legacy is one of resilience and dedication. Diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2009, Barbara fought her illness with unwavering strength and faith. Despite numerous challenges, she undertook significant initiatives, such as “The Lebanese Flag Trip,” to raise awareness and demonstrate the power of hope. Her journey inspired the establishment of the Barbara Nassar Association, ensuring that her mission to support cancer patients continues.

Empowering the Community

At the heart of the Barbara Nassar Cancer Center is a commitment to empowering the community and fostering a culture of support and solidarity. The center will not only provide medical and supportive care but also create opportunities for patients to engage in meaningful activities that enhance their well-being. By involving the community in educational and rehabilitative programs, the center aims to build a supportive network that extends beyond the confines of the hospital.

The educational floors of the center will serve as a museum of sorts, where school students can learn about cancer, its risk factors, and prevention methods. This initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness in the younger generation, encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyles and contribute to the fight against cancer.

A Call to Action

ALAM Suisse, along with its partners, has set this project in motion with great pride and a deep sense of responsibility.

However, the journey does not end here. The success of the Barbara Nassar Cancer Center depends on the continued support and dedication of the entire community.

Gabriel Sawaya emphasized the importance of community engagement in his speech:

Join us on this noble journey. Together, we can change the narrative of cancer care in Lebanon, building a legacy of hope, healing, and dignity.
